Understanding and Diagnosing Learning Disabilities, ADHD, and ASD in Children and Adults: A Guide to Assessment, Accommodations, and Resources

By: Sheila Simchon, LSP, LCSW

Understanding a person’s learning style and recognizing cognitive strengths and weaknesses helps individuals with Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) receive the appropriate supports to achieve success in school, work, and life. Accurate identification of these differences is part of the diagnostic process, and a formal diagnosis allows individuals to request accommodations.

Accommodations are adjustments to standard practices that enable people with disabilities to demonstrate their abilities fairly. For example, extra time on tests for someone with a reading disability allows them to show their knowledge without being penalized for slow reading. Accommodations are meant to provide equal opportunity, not to make tasks easier. Proper diagnosis is crucial for obtaining appropriate support.

Key Questions for Diagnosis:

  1. Who can diagnose?

    • Various professionals are involved in diagnosing SLD, ADHD, and ASD including clinical psychologists, school psychologists, educational psychologists, neuropsychologists, and physicians. Licensure and qualifications vary, and not all professionals are authorized to make formal diagnoses or prescribe medication.

  2. What does the process involve?

    • SLD assessment usually includes tests of intellectual ability, information processing, and current academic achievement. ADHD evaluation involves a detailed developmental history, questionnaires, attention tests, and cognitive assessments. ASD evaluations involve a cognitive test, detailed developmental history, questionnaires, and formal observations.

  3. How can I afford testing?

    • Testing can be expensive, but options exist to reduce costs:

      • Some health insurance plans cover part or all of the cost of testing is related to ASD and ADHD.

      • Vocational Rehabilitation Services may fund assessments if employment is affected.

      • Scholarships like Step Up for students may be used to pay for testing.

  4. What information do I need after diagnosis?

    • After assessment, schedule a meeting to review results and ask questions. Obtain a written report detailing the tests used, results, diagnosis, and specific recommendations linked to the identified disability. The report should be signed, include the professional’s credentials and license number, and be on official letterhead. Keep all documentation organized for future requests for accommodations.

Undiagnosed SLD, ADHD, or ASD can significantly impact success in education, work, and relationships. Understanding learning differences and obtaining a proper diagnosis are key steps toward accessing accommodations and making informed decisions. Multiple professionals can diagnose these conditions, and there are several ways to reduce the cost of assessment. After diagnosis, it’s important to obtain thorough documentation and keep records for future use.
