You Are Not Alone in Having Anxiety
Anxiety is one of the most common problems people seek treatment for. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, 18.1% of American people are affected by anxiety each year. That’s about 40 million American adults that experience anxiety every year. You are not alone in having anxiety. Some people experienced generalized anxiety where they are worried about what feels like everything. Another common way people experience anxiety is through panic attacks. PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is a form of anxiety that is common in abuse survivors and combat veterans.
Anxiety can be triggered for a variety of reasons. Some people feel as though they have had anxiety for all of their lives. Other people experience anxiety after a traumatic event. For some, people have anxiety when good things are happening and they are worried they will lose it.
The good news is that with the help of a compassionate and knowledgeable therapist, you can find calm and peace within yourself.
With Anxiety Treatment, you can feel more in control of your life and your emotions
Anxiety treatment is very effective and can be helpful for you. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is one of the most effective treatments for anxiety disorders. In Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, CBT for short, you will learn how your thoughts lead to feelings and behaviors. You will learn the most common unhealthy thinking patterns that lead to feelings of anxiety, panic and worrying. After learning to recognize your thinking patterns, you will learn to apply skills to modify those unhealthy thinking patterns and behaviors. CBT helps clients look at their thoughts and behaviors from a different lens. Many times in CBT, you will be given homework to address the topics you learned in therapy at home. The wonderful part of CBT is you learn to apply these principles yourself.
During anxiety treatment, you will learn how to incorporate healthy coping strategies to help reduce anxiety and stress. Some healthy coping skills may include mindfulness, meditation, progressive muscle relaxation, deep breathing exercises and movement based practices, such as yoga.
In sessions, you will learn the skills necessary to help you better manage those overwhelming thoughts and feelings that come with anxiety. By incorporating evidenced based treatments, you will gain the skills you’ll need to live the life that anxiety has been keeping you from living.
Counseling may help your anxiety but you have still have your doubts and worries about treatment…
Will we spend a lot of time talking about my childhood?
Your childhood will probably come up in therapy but it won’t be the main focus of treatment for anxiety. Belief systems are influenced by how you grew up, the family members you were around and the experiences you had as a child. It’s important to explore any dynamics that led to the formation of belief systems and thought patterns that helped to develop unhealthy thinking patterns that has led to anxiety. However, with CBT the main focus will be on your current thinking patterns, your symptoms that are present now and ways to help you in the here and now.
Will treatment be expensive and take years?
Treatment for anxiety is going to be specialized and personalized to your specific needs. Each client is given a treatment plan that they will work on in conjunction with your therapist.
